3rd Annual FDR Dinner with Senator Creigh Deeds

The third annual Franklin D. Roosevelt Dinner took place at Hampton Sydney College Monday night, and this dinner was sponsored by the Hampton Sydney Young Democrats. Senator Creigh Deeds (D) was the guest. Creigh is a Senator from Bath County and he is seeking the Democratic Nomination for Governor in 2009. Creigh talked to the audience about his plans for transportation. Deeds said that a rail system is something that should be considered in the near future, and believes that it can provide a cross state system of transportation. He also believes that some new roads will need to be built and that we must a take a look at improving our infrastructure for our roads and bridges.

2009 is the perfect year to run for Governor according to Senator Deeds because the next Governor will sign the redistricting legislation. Deeds spearheaded the effort for bipartisan redistricting this past session, and while his bill to create a bi-partisian redistricting council passed in the Senate, it imediatly failed in the House of Delegates. Deeds says as Govenor he will have the ability to amend the bill to improve the redistricting process for years to come.

Also k-12 education will be a big priority for Senator Deeds, he wants to continue what Govenor Kaine started and continue to provide Pre-K education for all children in Virginia. Deeds told the audience that millions of dollars are spent on children in grades k-3 that have failed and are repeating a grade, and Pre-K education could work. He says North Carolina made those vast improvements by investing the money into there education system and Virginia needs to follow suit.

Although Senator Deeds will more than likley face Delegate Brian Moran for the Democratic Nomination, Deeds is considered the front runner. He has rural appeal in the South and he has a good following in Northern Virginia. He is a moderate candidate that will draw support from bothsides of the isle. Not many candidates can say that they recieved the nomination of the NRA and the National Abortion League, but Creigh can.
